Deism A Belief In God Based On Reason

Deism: A Belief in God Based on Reason

What is Deism?

Deism is a belief in the existence of God, but not in the same way as in traditional Christianity. Deists believe that God's existence can be seen in the natural world, and that God does not intervene in the universe after creating it.

Origins of Deism

Deism originated in England in the 17th century, and was influenced by the writings of Edward Herbert, later 1st Baron Herbert of Cherbury. Herbert argued that the existence of God could be proven through reason alone, without the need for revelation or religious dogma.

Key Beliefs of Deism

Key beliefs of Deism include:

  • God exists and is the creator of the universe.
  • God is not involved in the day-to-day affairs of the world.
  • The existence of God can be proven through reason and observation of the natural world.
  • Religious rituals and practices are not necessary for salvation.

Deism has influenced many modern religious movements, including Unitarianism and Humanism.
